Toasting Tips

After you say "I Do," friends & family will want to congratulate and honor your vows by toasting to your marriage. We have prepared a toasting guide for you and others who will be toasting at the wedding- when to speak, how to keep it short and simple, and what to drink. Image for Champagne Toast

Who Speaks: Traditionally, the father of the bride initiates the toast and summons everyone to enjoy the meal while congratulating the new couple and thanking everyone for joining in on the celebration. With Champagne in hand, and after most of the dinner is completed, the other speeches are given. The Maid and Man of honor are usually first to give the speeches. Siblings or non hosting stepparents are welcome to give a speech at this time as well. Finally, someone can cap off the speeches. This can be either the groom, if he wants to say a few sweet words about his new wife, or the host can come back for a final thank you (and a "Let's get this party started!") spiel.

How to make it Memorable: Here are some tips to make the speech memorable, in a good way!

1.) Don't wing it - It's important to have a game plan when giving a speech; otherwise your potential to get nervous and start rambling will only intensify as you start talking. If you have a somewhat planned speech it will give you more confidence and calm your nerves.

2.) Keep it short and simple: Most speeches should take between one and two minutes but should not go over three minutes. This is not the time to tell every story about your childhood friend or high school adventures. Keep the stories to ones everyone will know (and not be embarrassed about!) and try not to ramble or people will become uninterested.

3.) Talk about the couple: It's fine to start with, "I've know Liz for 12 years..." but also try to weave in the groom, or other half of the couple. Remember this day is about both of them and not just the person your the closest with.

4.) Limit alcohol intake before the Speech: I know you will probably be nervous to give a speech in front of 100+ people, but just remember that you will know the vast majority of them and they are your friends. Try to stay calm and don't drink too much alcohol before the speech or you may end up saying something you regret, or worse, that embarrasses the new couple.

What to Drink: Champagne is the traditional choice for wedding toasts. In order to be called "Champagne", the grapes must have been grown from the Champagne region of France. Nicolas Feuillatte Champagne Brut Blue Label, Ruinart Blanc De Blancs, & Poper-Heidsieck Brut are all perfect for popping on your special day. Another idea would be a signature cocktail. The options are endless but make sure it's something most guests will enjoy and have the caterers serve another choice, such as sparkling cider, as well. Whether you decide to go the traditional route or make up your own drink, be sure your caterer knows when the speeches are so they can make sure each guest has something to toast with when the time comes.

Bridal Essentials Kit

When it comes to your wedding day you can never be too prepared. That's why we have come up with a little Bridal Essentials list to keep you from having a meltdown and make sure everything (including the wedding night!) runs smoothly. If you are getting married in Tahoe, even if it's in August, you are going to need something to fend off the night chill. Once the sun goes down, the chilly air comes out! Make sure to have a pretty scarf, vest, or cardigan to throw on over your wedding gown so you can still enjoy the outside without shivering.

Next, you'll want to eventually kick off those wedding shoes and a pair of flip flops close by will save your feet and keep you on the dance floor.

Remember we are at 6,200 feet, which means we are that much closer to the sun and sunscreen is a bridal essential.Try to avoid any oily sunscreen which will only make your face shiny for all the photos. We like Neutrogena Sunblock Ultra Sheer Dry, and you can find it in any grocery or drugstore.

You should also visit Ms. and Mrs. website; they have lots of little Bridal Essential tool kits that will save you from any last minute dilema. These little kits include everything from earring backs to double sided tape and even stain remover and extra wedding bands.

Last but certainly not least, don't forget your wedding night! Wow your new hubby with some beautiful and sexy lingerie, like this little number from Victoria's Secret.

Above everything else, just remember to breathe. This moment in your life will only happen once so try to forget any of the little things that may go wrong and enjoy your day!

Lake Tahoe Lakefront Bridesmaid Lunch

I sit here writing this blog post in absolute awe after witnessing an unbelievable amount of love, friendship, and joy from Paige and Mike's wedding this past weekend. After spending a year and half helping Paige and Mike plan and design their wedding, I grew quite close to each family and boy are they fabulous! Some of the most loving, welcoming, and inviting people I have ever met! I am sad that everything is over, but extremely happy for Paige and Mike! This wedding was not a one day affair, but instead a five day celebration: rehearsal dinner on the Tahoe Gal, bridesmaid lunch at a lakefront estate, welcome party at a beach, wedding at Chambers Landing, and a post wedding brunch at Gar Woods! These guys know how to throw a great party! We tried to capture each day on camera, but I'm not the greatest photographer! So, I summed up the best pics below!

We held the bridesmaid lunch at a gorgeous lakefront estate in Rubicon! The bride LOVES peaches (loves them so much that we designed the entire wedding after peaches), so we helped the hosts, Barbara and Jill, to style this soiree with peaches. The linens, beverages, and gifts each featured peaches!

The setting - absolutely stunning! La Tavola's new Carlton Melon linen was the perfect splash of color!

Top left - the bride and bridesmaids arriving by boat! Top right - our delightful mascot for the afternoon, Dolly. Bottom - our lovely hosts Jill & Barbara! The green accents on the table are gifts for each bridesmaid - bottles of lotion labeled "Our Paige is sweet as a Peach!"

One Fine Day Events and North Tahoe CateringThe menu: gourmet grilled cheese, fresh seasonal salad, peach infused champagne, and peach cobbler (not pictured). In one word - YUM!

Shortly after the lunch, the bride and bridesmaids left by boat and arrived at the beach for a Happy Hour Welcome Party!

The entire day was relaxing and beautiful - the perfect way to enjoy a wedding weekend on the lake!

Lake Tahoe Wedding Gift Bags

This past week and weekend we were busy little bees planning Paige and Mike's wedding! It was an absolutely amazing wedding! Guests flew in from all over the country + Australia! As most were unfamiliar with Tahoe, we put together the perfect tour guide in a bag. We delivered the gift bags to the door steps of vacation rentals and hotel rooms of each guest on their arrival date. The ingredients included: a welcome letter from the lovely bride and groom, Lake Tahoe bottled water, Tahoe trail bars, sunscreen, and a doublesided Lake Tahoe Activities card complete with trail locations, beach information, water sport options, and all sorts of other activities and dining options.

Sonoma Wedding with Kate Harrison Photography

We had such a fabulous time helping Erin and Nick plan their absolutely stunning wedding a few weeks ago. I was super nervous about the weather not cooperating, as pretty much everything took place outdoors at the CornerStone Gardens in Sonoma. But, come the wedding day, everything fell into place. The sun came out, the wind died down, and the bride and groom were elated! The wonderful Kate Harrison captured every magical moment throughout the wedding day. Lake Tahoe Wedding Inspiration | Ceremony Readings

Ceremony readings are a integral part of any wedding and whether you choose Bible passages, excerpts from a treasured poem or lyrics to a favorite song, the words you (or your readers) select will have a powerful impact on you and your guests. Whatever you decide, be sure the words are meaningful to both you and your groom and that they'll echo through the hearts of those who are sharing this day with you. Below are some of our favorite readings:

Poems/Prose:

Union by Robert Fulghum

Art of Marriage by Wilferd A. Peterson

Excerpts from 100 Love Sonnets by Pablo Neruda

Epithalamion by Richard Crashaw

The Two of You by Czeslaw Milosz

Spiritual/Religious:

Colossians 3:12-17

Romans 12:9-18

Apache Wedding Prayer

Traditional Chinese Oath of Friendship - Anonymous

Hindu Marriage Poem

Song Lyrics:

Come Rain or Shine, lyrics by Harold  Arlen and Johnny Mercer

Little Things Mean A Lot by Kitty Kallen

To Love is Not to Possess by  James Kavanaugh

And a personal favorite from Richard Bach

A soul mate is someone who has locks that fit our keys, and keys to fit our locks. When we feel safe enough to open the locks, our truest selves step out and we can be completely and honestly who we are; we can be loved for who we are and not for who we're pretending to be. Each unveils the best part of the other. No matter what else goes wrong around us, with that one person we're safe in our own paradise. Our soul mate is someone who shares our deepest longings, our sense of direction. When we're two balloons, and together our direction is up, chances are we've found the right person. Our soul mate is the one who makes life come to life.

These passages and pieces of prose are a small sampling of readings. If nothing rings true to who you are, below are some online sources for additional options.

Lake Tahoe Wedding Inspiration | Sweet Treats

Boy, have we come a long way since the days of multi-tier white weddings cakes draped with artificial flowers. Today's brides tend to favor designer cakes draped in fondant or covered in lacy, sugary flowers or tables and trays teeming with treats that beckon guests to indulge themselves. Whether your tastes lean more towards a traditional cake or a farm-table full of goodies, here are some ideas to inspire your sweet tooth.

Lake Tahoe Wedding Inspiration Board | A Pop of Color

We are just back from Sonoma, where we planned the most gorgeous wedding at the CornerStone Gardens! Everything about this wedding was perfect - the cute couple, vintage decorative accents, flowers, entertainment, and the venue! Plus, the sun was shining - we haven't seen much of the sun lately in Tahoe, so we were loving the UV rays kissing the vineyards! As we return to the office with a little sunburn and feeling very inspired by the flowers and greenery in Sonoma, we thought we'd inspire you with some color trends! Unexpected pops of color are one of the top wedding trends for 2011 and how easy yet impactful it is. Regardless of whether you prefer pinks or greens, blues or yellows, vivid flowers will quickly brighten up your bridesmaid's look and lively linens will be the perfect finishing touch for reception tables. We've pulled some ideas using our favorite hues to inspire you to add a little zest to your wedding palette.

Engagement Photos | Kate Harrison Photograpy

In a few weeks we have the absolute pleasure of planning Erin and Nick's wedding at the CornerStone Gardens in Sonoma! Words cannot explain how excited I am for this wedding. To start, the venue has 3 separate enticing locations for each celebration. The ceremony will take place in the gardens overlooking the vineyard; dinner will take place under a circular canvas tent; and dancing will take place in the barn with a killer band! Just think of the possibilities for decorating each site! It helps when you have a super creative, fun couple and a very talented photographer on board! Kate Harrison will be capturing the day - you can see a little peak of her work during their engagement photo session below! Stay tuned to see images of the real deal in a couple months!

Wedding Inspiration | Pink Beach Wedding

I recently created these inspiration boards for a client and just had to share them! During the design process I always get so excited about all of the pieces coming together. This wedding will take place on the beach at the Mourelatos Resort in Tahoe Vista. We have a fabulous large sandy beach as our canvas and the lake as our backdrop! The bride and groom have requested an elegant, slightly casual, romantic setting. The first inspiration board displays the floral inspiration, while the second displays the style and ambiance. In a few months, we will reveal the actual wedding pics!

Wedding Inspiration | Wooden Wedding Accents

Incorporating wood into your wedding decor is a somewhat trendy thing these days. Farm tables are off the charts popular! Hindsight Bride wrote a great two part series on Tahoe Unveiled's blog explaining the many, many different ways you can incorporate wooden accents into the wedding decor. Tips for Mothers of the Bride | Reno Magazine

Recently, I was asked to write an article for Reno Magazine, a lifestyle magazine focusing on the favorite products, places, and pastimes of their viewers. The focus of this current issue is fitness, travel, and wedding plans! I was honored to receive this invitation. I decided to write about something that is not often discussed - the mother-daughter relationship throughout the planning process.

This can be a delicate topic and is different from one wedding to another, depending on the relationship of the mother and daughter. Any issus nd sensitivities are usually private and personal, and only known to the mother and daughter. In creating this article, I looked back into my years of experience in working with many a bride and a mom that have experienced episodes of not seeing eye-to-eye. I totally get it - it can be really difficult to get along seamlessly when dealing with thousands of dollars, all of your family and friends, and let's not forget ... emotions! Hopefully these Tips for the Mother of the Bride will help avoid any turmoils!

Read the article in full on Reno Magazine's site or read it below.

Avoid Bridal Meltdowns, Tips for Mothers of the Bride As seen in March, 2011 issue of Reno Magazine

When it comes to a wedding celebration, there are oodles of lovely and enjoyable things a mother and daughter can do to plan the perfect day. I have fluffed many a train, defeated Mother Nature’s outbursts, and directed teams of wedding professionals; but when it comes to mothers and their daughters there are a few key points that must be addressed, prior to working with me.

You want to enjoy both the wedding planning process and the wedding day, thus before you get too involved, it is very important that you have a simple conversation with your daughter, mainly discussing one little but ultra imperative question, “How can I help?” You may be thinking, “I’m her mother, why would I need to ask this?” Well, I don’t want to burst your bubble, but I do want to help you avoid many mother-of-the-bride-bridal-breakdown moments! First and foremost, the purpose of a wedding is to celebrate the bride and the groom; regardless of how simple or extravagant this wedding becomes, always keep this in the front of your mind. The wedding should reflect the bride and groom’s personalities. Out of a hundred and something weddings I have had two mothers take it upon themselves to plan a wedding that reflected their individual styles, wishes, and personalities. In both cases the bride couldn’t wait for the whole thing to be over and didn’t enjoy much of the celebration at all. To prevent this from happening to you, I have created a list of tips and helpful pointers.

UNROMANTIC, BUT IMPERATIVE DETAILS

  1. Who’s paying? First and foremost determine who is paying for the wedding. If you are splitting the bill, make sure you note on a word or excel doc how much each person is contributing. If you would like your money to go towards a very specific part of the wedding, note this in the document as well. But, keep in mind that footing the entire or partial bill doesn’t mean you can control every aspect and design every part of the event.
  2. What's Your Budget? It is absolutely essential to set an overall budget prior to booking any vendors and seeking venues. Allocate specific funds to each category and consult with your planner for suggestions.
  3. Prioritize! After solidifying the above, determine the bride and groom’s priorities (great band, the wine, the décor, etc). Select 3 – 4 and spend a higher percentage of your budget here.

ENJOY THE PLANNING PROCESS

  1. Blend style and decor -Discover your daughter’s style - if she is a tomboy, don’t force ultra girly-girl ideas on her. Figure out her style and find things that enhance it, not transform it.
  2. Be a helping hand - Offer your assistance, but don’t require that your opinions and ideas must be put in place. Agree to compromise on the aspects that are really important to each of you.
  3. Play favorites - Create a list of things you would like to help with. Ask her to choose a few things from your list.
  4. Avoid Comparisons - Try not to compare this wedding to ones in the past like yours, or your sister's wedding 10 years ago. Trends change and styles differ; your daughter will only grow to be frustrated if she thinks you are trying to create your own wedding day.

How to Obtain a Marriage License in Lake Tahoe

I recently wrote this article for Tahoe Unveiled and since every Tahoe bride and groom needs to know how to obtain a marriage license, I am posting the bits and bobs here too!

Prior to saying your "I do's" you have to obtain one very important piece of paper - a Marriage License! The main rule of thumb is to apply for the license in the same county as your ceremony location. In the small region that covers Lake Tahoe, there are a total of five counties. To help you find the correct office based on your ceremony county, we have listed the towns and counties below, along with a list of requirements.

Counties

Placer County Olympic Valley, Tahoe City, Carnelian Bay, Tahoe Vista, Kings Beach, Homewood (the beginning of the west shore), and part of Truckee Nevada County Nevada County covers part of Truckee (inquire with your venue to find out if the location falls in Placer County or Nevada County) El Dorado County Tahoma and South Lake Tahoe Washoe County Incline Village and Reno Douglas County Glenbrook, Zephyr Cove, and Stateline

Requirements

* Call in advance to schedule an appointment * Both the bride and groom must be present * Government issued identification * Proof of divorce if previously married * Cash or check for full payment * Application is valid for 90 days

Rue Magazine

I just discovered this new lifestyle magazine titled, Rue. Designed for interior designers, this mag features the finest designs for living rooms, kitchens, and the home. I often ask my clients to send me their tear sheets - pages from magazines that reflect a theme, color palette, or even accesories that reflect the look, style, ambiance, or color scheme they would like at their wedding. Sometimes it's easier to relate to magazines that don't dawn beautiful weddings, but instead beautiful home interiors. Whether it be a Pottery Barn living room or an Elle Decor kitchen, it is important to show your planner and designer what you love, hate, and most importantly the look you would like your wedding to reflect. Rue's simplistic layout, soft palette, and phenomenal designs, will provide oodles of inspiration!
